Making America’s Finest City a little more Irie The Island Vibe Music Festival comes to San Diego

On June 24, island music fans throughout Southern California kicked off the summer music festival season and filled the Qualcomm Stadium Practice Field with positive vibes. Cultural pride was celebrated on the huge lawn or in the VIP section.

And of course to round out the festivities, food vendors brought on the Aloha noms–from mouthwatering malasadas, scrumptious spam musubis, and palatable poke nachos. Wash it all down at the Beergarden, and attendees could head down to the Island Vibe Vendor Village to check out unique wares ranging from jewelry, clothing, and art.

Kush County kicked things off on stage. Spawnbreezie brought on his musical blend of R&B and Hawaiian sounds, while Lea Love featured her new single “Say It,” a fun and flirty track perfect for the summer season. Kimie brought on her lush sounds, and also released her new single “Bamboo.” Katchafire was the headliner, and really pumped up the crowd in their signature mellow yet energetic way.

In addition to some of the best Polynesian recording artists on the scene, fans also enjoyed beautiful performances by Dancers of the Pacific, featuring traditional dances from the islands of Hawaii, Chamorro, Tahiti, and Samoa.

The Island Vibe Music Festival is brought to life by the non-profit organization, Prime Motivation. Established in 2004, its dedicated team is committed to promoting cultural diversity by engaging their audience through education programs, multi-cultural events, the “Inspire our Youth” Art of Dance, and rewarding talented youth with scholarships.

This year’s event was a great way to arouse the palates of island music fans for the summer. Until next year, a hui hou!

DAVID CROSBY & FRIENDS at RAMS HEAD ON STAGE

“Regardless if Crosby ever reunites with any of those previous pals, he’s embarking on arguably his most prolific period to date, which coming from a discography that pre-dates Woodstock, is a testament to an insatiable artistic drive that surpasses so many of his peers.”

David Crosby and friends blessed the Rams Head On Stage venue and gave one heck of a show. Jumping back and forth between singing and talking about the back story to some of his classics, it was a Crosby fans dream show.

Gavin Turek Returns to America’s Finest City at the University of California, San Diego

Story & Images by Cheryl Andaya

Edited by Aimee von G

La Jolla, CA–For the students who needed a much-deserved break from studying, Los Angeles native Gavin Turek provided the music to dance and let loose on Monday night at UCSD’s performance lounge, The Loft. The electro-pop goddess went the distance with her signature neo-disco sound and vivacious dance moves, inspiring Tritons and San Diego fans alike to get up on their feet and boogie-woogie on with her.

Gavin Turek at University of California, San Diego

“This is my first time at UC San Diego…you guys have such a nice campus…like really nice…like why didn’t I go here (laughter)? I went to Scripps not the same Scripps (you have here in San Diego)…an all girls school Scripps College in Claremont. I just want to let you know that I went to college too. Yes I did. I did go to college and I’m not using my degree (laughter). It’s ok. It was a good experience. (Introducing her DJ) this is Val Fleury by the way (Val yells out ‘Chico State!’). So I am excited to be here. I think this is my first college show. (The crowd cheers on being he first) Give it up for yourselves! Thank you for coming. I really appreciate it. So I’m from LA, born and raised. I just released my new EP.  Are there any artist in the house? I hear you! Good for you going to college, I did the same thing. It worked out just fine for me. Don’t worry about that decision. I just want to get to know you (the audience) a little bit. I’ll talk more later. Thank you for coming. We’re gonna play some new songs off the EP so if you know it, you better dance and sing along (the crowd cheers!)” – Gavin Turek

JOHN MAYER STOPPED THROUGH THE NATIONS CAPITAL

Written & Images by Renita Clarke
John Mayer, alongside opening act The Record Company played to a near sold out crowd at the Verizon Center on Thursday, April 5. The Search For Everything Tour gives you a little bit of all of John Mayer’s world.  The show is set up to give you a few mini sets that focus around John and his guitars.
The tour opens and runs through like a documentary. With text and commentary flashing on the screen in the back, the breaks between set changes and the flow of the music. It’s a well put together performance from beginning to end.
The first set is dedicated to John and his full band. This is followed by a solo set with John. Then is wraps with an epic set by the “trio” featuring John’s Bassist Pino Palladino and Drummer Steve Jordan.
John also throws fans a curve ball by changing the set list in each show. If you have missed a show so far, don’t worry! John and the crew have plenty more dates.

ANN WILSON OF HEART ROCKS THE MARYLAND HALL STAGE

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ann Wilson of the famed Heart hit the stage at Maryland Hall last night and didn’t disappoint.

The mega soprano belted out Heart classics, covers and originals. Normally we see Ann performing with her equally talented sister, Nancy Wilson, as Heart, thrilling hundreds of thousands of concert fans.

Even though I LOVE HEART, it was really refreshing to see Ann and her band perform the hits with a different take on them. I feel this tour is giving Ann a chance to stretch out as a singer and explore new traveled musical ground.

Next stop for the band is Wednesday at the Birchmere in Alexandria,VA. If your a fan of Heart, Ann or just good ole’ rock and roll, this is the show to catch!!

MAC MILLER’S TOUR MAKES IT’S LAST STOP IN BALTIMORE

Written & Images by Renita Clarke

Mac Miller’s newest album, “The Divine Feminine,” which entered the Billboard chart at No. 1 has been a surprise to folks, but not to me. I feel Miller is one of the biggest underestimate hip hop artist around. When I heard his “The Divine Feminine” tour was wrapping at Baltimore Soundstage, I had to go out to support. clockworkdjThe night kicked of with opening sets from ClockworkDJ & The Whooligan. Both dj’s dope in their own right. ClockworkDJ plays double duty on this tour because he also acts as Mac Miller’s dj. From ClockworkDJ video game samples and remixes to The Whooligans old school/ new school hip hop hits, the gentlemen had the crowd highly excited. I was definitely impressed by both sets.
thewhooliganMiller finally took the stage and opened with one of his track “Bird Call” & “Break the Law”. Miller dropped tracks “God is Fair, Sexy Nasty” , “We” & “Soulmate” from the Divine Feminine album.  Miller also payed homage to his classics like “Best Day Ever” and “Knock Knock.” The cherry on the sundae was the finale of “When in Rome”, which Miller had the crowd jumping and screaming for more.macmiler_02All in all Miller puts on a great energized show that appeals to his fan base, yet is welcoming to new fans. I hope folks gives this album and change. I feel this could be the crossover into mainstream Miller is looking for. I could definitely see Miller rocking 50,000 seat arena and world tours very soon!

Nick Jonas & Demi Lovato ‘Future Now’ Tour hits DC

Written & Images by Renita Clarke

Last night Nick Jonas & Demi Lovato’s “Honda Civic Tour: Future Now” landed at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

It’s great to see two friends with the same musicality and fan base jelly so well together. The show opens with Mr. “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” by Mike Posner. Posner and his band played a few of his new and old hits. The vibe of his set goes with the low-key vibe the Demi & Nick production gives. The production is focused on the music. You’ll get an occasional moment on the background screens, but mostly the attention is on the artist and the songs.

IMG_8521

With Jonas & Lovato co-lining this tour, the twosome crafted a well-planned set list, that showcases their vocal ability and their upbeat dance hits. The pair also shares a band, which is half-hidden from site, but you definitely feel their presences, in songs, such as Jonas “Chains” & “Champagne Problems”.

All in all, the “Future Now” tour doesn’t give you a ton of bells & whistles like say a Justin Bieber tour, but with Posner, Jonas & Lovato vocal ability, it’s refreshing to see twenty-somethings base a tour on singing rather than a lot of sensory overload.
