Making America’s Finest City a little more Irie The Island Vibe Music Festival comes to San Diego

Story by Aimee von G

On June 24, island music fans throughout Southern California kicked off the summer music festival season and filled the Qualcomm Stadium Practice Field with positive vibes. Cultural pride was celebrated on the huge lawn or in the VIP section.

And of course to round out the festivities, food vendors brought on the Aloha noms–from mouthwatering malasadas, scrumptious spam musubis, and palatable poke nachos. Wash it all down at the Beergarden, and attendees could head down to the Island Vibe Vendor Village to check out unique wares ranging from jewelry, clothing, and art.

Kush County kicked things off on stage. Spawnbreezie brought on his musical blend of R&B and Hawaiian sounds, while Lea Love featured her new single “Say It,” a fun and flirty track perfect for the summer season. Kimie brought on her lush sounds, and also released her new single “Bamboo.” Katchafire was the headliner, and really pumped up the crowd in their signature mellow yet energetic way.

In addition to some of the best Polynesian recording artists on the scene, fans also enjoyed beautiful performances by Dancers of the Pacific, featuring traditional dances from the islands of Hawaii, Chamorro, Tahiti, and Samoa.

The Island Vibe Music Festival is brought to life by the non-profit organization, Prime Motivation. Established in 2004, its dedicated team is committed to promoting cultural diversity by engaging their audience through education programs, multi-cultural events, the “Inspire our Youth” Art of Dance, and rewarding talented youth with scholarships.

This year’s event was a great way to arouse the palates of island music fans for the summer. Until next year, a hui hou!

Another Con in the books with Baltimore Comic Con 2016

The 17th Annual Baltimore Comic Con arrived this past weekend to its home at the Baltimore Convention Center. With thousands in attendance, this was a really awesome year.

BCC held no stops for celeb fan fare this year with the lineup of Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Kristian Nairn (Game of Thrones), Candice Patton (The Flash) & Michael Rowe (Arrow). We were also honored to have the 2016 “Guest of Honor” Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

I really like this con because it really shows love to the “comic” book fans. Comic powerhouses had a great presence this year. Boom!, Valiant & Visonary were in the building, along side my new fav After Shock.

The Harvey Awards were great this year with graphic novelist Vivek J Tiwary had the crowd laughing and entertained the entire night. The prestigious “Hall of Fame” award went to the creator of MAD Magazine, Al Jaffee.

The exhibit floor was filled with really great cosplayers and talented artist. From create your own comic company “Webtoon” to 3-D figures from “Mucky Chris” to Nerd Love dating advice from Harris O’Malley, it really was a little something for everyone.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year!

Takashi & Much More at the Baltimore Tattoo Convention

Written & Images: Renita Clarke

The 2016 Baltimore Tattoo Convention was held in downtown at the Convention Center this weekend. The main floor was filled with tattoo artist mainly from the east coast, but folks came from far and wide to hopefully get inked by an artist they might not otherwise get to meet. The stage gave you a good break form the tattoo action with acts that included suspension and some cool sets with nails and a lot of sparks to the face. Another added perk throughout the weekend is all the cool vendors, such as, Inked and Fukitt.

One of my highlights was catching up with my main man Chris Blinston. Chris was on Season 6 of Ink Master on Spike TV. When I tell you his portrait tattoos are amazing. You really have to see his work live. You can find Chris at the “No Hard Feelings Tattoo & Piercing Gallery” in Coral Springs, FL.

The other highlight was Takashi. Takashi is a master of the Tebori Method of Tattooing. Takashi home base is at Runin Tattoo in Brooklyn NY. Takashi use of the ancient art of Tebori, keeps in in very high demand. He was booked for the whole weekend of the convention.

Written & Images by Renita Clarke

Grammy winner Brandy Norwood extended her engagement in the Tony Award-winning, record-breaking hit musical Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre, until August 2, 2015.

Norwood, who starred opposite the late Whitney Houston in the most recent TV version of “Cinderella,” is currently making her Broadway debut in the role of Roxie Hart. Originally scheduled for an eight-week limited engagement through June 21, was extended due to popular demand. (Note: Norwood didn’t perform June 22-23 and June 27-28.)

We had the honor to see the show and meet Brandy this past weekend. The show is and Brandy is amazing and a must see. You have one more week to catch Brandy before Rumor Willis (Dancing with the Stars) takes over.

Blackstar Film Festival Premieres “They Die By Dawn” in Philly

Photography by Renita Clarke

Jeymes Samuel’s “They Die By Dawn” is a fantastic 51 minute film based on the true lives of African American cowboys.

Saturday featured the premiere of the film at the 3rd Annual Blackstar Film Festival at the International House. The screening was sold out. I would say the crowd loved it as they laughed and even spoke back to the screen as the action was going on. Then we were blessed to have a great and informative Q & A with actor Michael K Williams (The Wire, Broadwalk Empire, The Sopranos).

Jeymes was able to assemble a who’s who all star roster of greats actors, such as, Giancarlo Esposito, Michael K Williams, Jesse Williams, Erykah Badu, Nate Parker, Bokeem Woodbine and Rosario Dawson.
